The Vacuette® discard tube is a blood collection tube which does not contain any additives. Therefore this tube is NOT suitable for analysis. The discard tube is used to help prevent haemolysis among other things. When drawing blood from a patient, the discard tube should be used first. Consequently, the other blood collection tubes, which will be analysed, can be filled. Even when using a coagulation tube (citrate) in combination with a winged needle, a discard tube can already absorb the dead volume of the tube and thus prevent underfilled citrate tubes.
